Runner Highlight

Sam, a father and marathon runner from Southern California, was on a run one day when a crazy idea came to him.  As a father of a child with autism, he had been struggling with what to do to help this cause.  Sam decided he would run 60 marathons in one calendar year to raise money for "Operation Jack".   That day he began planning for a journey that he hopes will raise $100,000 for Training for Autism in honor of his son Jack.

But Sam wasn't always a marathoner, or even a runner.  In fact, he was overweight, a smoker, and in poor health.  For his 30th birthday, his wife bought him an iPod in hopes of getting him to walk to improve his health.  Sam's life was forever changed when he began running and quickly figured out what his legs were capable of.  Now, 5 years later, he has run over 35 marathons and 2 ultramarathons.  With 13 marathons already completed this year, he has 47 left to accomplish his goal.  His secret?  "I'm just a guy doing it", he says.  "Sometimes I am tired, but it's nothing compared to what my son goes through every day".

So what does a typical week look like for this marathon maniac?  Mondays are usually a few miles easy for recovery, Tuesday is a rest day, Wednesday he will run between 6-12 miles, and Thursday and Friday about 4-6 miles each.  Sam tries to travel as late on Saturdays as he can to just about make it to the Expo but still spend time with his family.  Sundays are usually Race Day, and he flies home immediately to be home for dinner.  He works full time, drops his kids off at school at 7:30 in the morning every day, and never breaks his Thursday lunch date with his 4 year old daughter.  His son Jack, just 6 years old, is in constant therapy and has very limited speech and has severe social anxiety.  Sam hopes his journey will make a difference in the lives of many children struggling with the same disorder.

If you want to help raise money for Operation Jack, The SF Marathon has chosen Operation Jack as a Cause to Run Official Charity.  For more information on how to Race or Train for Free while fundraising for this cause, please visit our website.
